Author Lindsey drager and Designer Steven Seighman in Spine Magazine

Lindsey Drager, the author of four wonderful Dzanc novels (The Sorrow Proper, 2015; The Lost Daughter Collective, 2017; The Archive of Alternate Endings, 2019; and The Avian Hourglass, 2024), sat down with designer Steven Seighman in an interview for Spine magazine about her forthcoming novel, The Avian Hourglass.

Vyki Hendy interviewed Lindsey about her ideas behind the book, the themes it explores, and about the significance of the book’s experimental structure. The book is organized in a unique way: 180 sections that count down as you read and finish on section 1.

Steven was asked about his process designing the book’s cover: how he selected certain elements to focus on, what his prior drafts looked like, and how he landed on the final design. The interview even provides four earlier drafts of the cover so readers can visualize Steven’s journey to achieving that final design.
